A fun three-tiered chocolate cake, covered in fondant. The white (and green, which I colored) was store bought, the blue was fondant I made from marshmallows. It was the first time I had ever bought fondant (I've always made my own), and I must say that while I prefer the taste of homemade fondant, the store bought fondant was much easier to work with!
This cake is made of a combination of fondant (for the scales, headband, and ocean animals) and buttercream. It is shaped from a 9 in round and an 9x13 sheet cake (not my own design).
I was in the mood to pipe when I made this impromptu cake for a friend. Made of butter cream in shades of green, yellow, and white, the side design was inspired by a wallpaper found online.
This batman cake was made to replicate a cake the customer found online. The decoration as pictured here was made entirely of fondant. Batman and Robin action heroes were added later to the top of the cake so as to be standing in the spotlight.
This cake (including the flowers in the periphery) was mostly fondant. Buttercream was used to outline the cut-outs in the wings. I shaped the butterfly from a 9 x 13 sheet cake. My 6 year old made the purple flower with pink dots :)
This water-themed birthday cake combines the most elements I've ever used on a single cake: fondant, buttercream, peanut butter, brown sugar, gum paste, wood, and plastic :).
This cake looks small here but was a monster to make. The two 'radio' towers sticking out of the top are actually dowels to hold the cake in place. The bushes were made of gum paste, and the dirt was brown sugar. I actually painted the fondant outside of the building and the grassy area with food coloring after they were assembled. Spiderman is swinging down, suspended between a lamp post and a radio tower, having already snared Shocker with his fishing line web.
Made for my son's Joy School graduation, this simple, round, buttercream cake was bright and fun. The children's names were written around the side-- a touch they all enjoyed.
Sculpted from stacked sheet cakes, Lightning McQueen is covered in fondant with both buttercream and fondant accents. The mouth is actually a cutout with white fondant inserted to create a feeling of depth.
Made to tease my husband on his 30th birthday, this was a simple round cake frosted with chocolate buttercream and surrounded by cupcakes (some decorated by my children). The figures on top were purchased, the idea was an original.
Utilizing a formed cake pan, this cake required no sculpting, but still took some work! Star tips were used for the roofs as well as the border. Flowers adorn the vines climbing the walls. Fit for a four year old princess!
Also made from a formed cake pan, this cake was mostly covered in buttercream, but also included metal accents such as brads and wire. The pan was for a classical guitar, so it took a little tweaking to have it resemble the electric guitar my friend was hoping for. The dark color was supposed to be black. It was the first time I tried to use spray-on color and it turned out more purple than the black I was hoping for. Live and learn.
I learned while planning this cake that my local grocery store doesn't have blue jello, though I think the green worked out just fine! The hill was made from the chunk I cut out for the lake, and the stones are an ice cream topping I discovered at the store. I used several different tips to make grass, vines and flowers before topping the cake with plastic dinosaurs.
A formed cake pan from my mother-in-law allowed me to make this fun cake that little girls adored. The bear is covered in buttercream stars and surrounded by multi-colored mini marshmallows.
I made this cake for our baby shower for our son. The cake pan used to make this also comes with pieces to make it into a batman cake instead. It is covered in various colors of buttercream using a star tip, and is surrounded by cupcakes spelling out our son's name.
I made this traditional cake not long after completing the first Wilton decorating course. It is decorated entirely in buttercream. The border around the base is made of frosting leaves.
